Let’s face it, couples argue. A certain amount of arguing is even healthy in a relationship. It helps bring relationship issues to the forefront so they can be worked through to strengthen your bond.
When arguments carry on for long periods of time, become a frequent occurrence, or lead to violence, they can weaken and endanger the relationship.
The key to any relationship is communication. When communication breaks down it can damage the relationship.
Couples therapy can help. Even when only one partner is willing to participate in therapy, the communication skills that partner develops can positively impact the relationship.
Intimacy issues are another reason couples seek therapy. Many people find the sensitive topics involved in intimacy difficult to discuss. A therapist can help by asking the right questions and putting the couple at ease when discussing such a personal subject.
Regardless of the issues you are currently struggling with counseling can help. Each couple is unique, and in my office, will be treated as such. I do not subscribe to a cookie cutter approach, as one couple’s needs are never quite the same as another’s. What follows is some general information on how I work with couples.
I would see the two of you together for the first session to get the narrative of your relationship and more information on what prompted you to reach out.
I would then meet with each of you, at least once, to get family of origin information, as well as information about prior relationships. This helps me identify what each of you may be bringing into the relationship from your past which may be getting in the way now.
After those, we would all come back together for an appointment and decide how to proceed.
When appropriate, we will reprocess difficult early life events using EMDR therapy. After these events are reprocessed, partners often stop getting triggered by one another which can significantly reduce the amount of tension in the relationship. You can read more about EMDR therapy at
